The Cage Door Is Open

The Gospel of the Kingdom — Part 2

Salvation is a free gift. That’s what I was told when I first came in. And then, almost in the same breath, somebody handed me a list of things I had to do to keep it. Do the list, you’re saved. Miss the list, you were probably never saved in the first place.

Something is wrong with that picture. Before you shut me off, I am not telling you salvation is a weak little thing that only keeps you out of hell and asks nothing of you. Stay with me and see where I’m going.

Let me give you a picture. A lion born in a cage never knows it’s in captivity. It was born there. It gets fed. It looks through the bars sometimes and feels a pull toward something it can’t name, but it doesn’t understand the feeling. Then one day I walk over, unlock the door, and swing it open. That lion has been saved. I gave it salvation.

Now here’s the part people miss. The door stays open. That lion can walk out into a whole world of freedom, or it can lie there and keep eating the free meals as long as somebody brings them. Either way — the door is open and it stays open. The saving already happened.

That’s what salvation is. Every person ever born comes into this world in the cage. Scripture is blunt about it. At birth, you belong to the kingdom of darkness. Left the way you are, when you leave this body you go to hell — and it doesn’t matter how many good deeds you stack up, because good deeds don’t change who owns you.

Get saved, and ownership changes. You no longer belong to the enemy. You belong to the one true God, and the enemy has no more claim on you. Jesus already paid the price for every human being on the planet. The moment you accept His claim to you — out loud — the door of the cage swings open.

This is the Word of God, so hear it in full.

Romans 10:9-11 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.”

Notice what’s in that passage and what isn’t. Believe in your heart. Confess with your mouth. That’s it. Nothing in there about your lifestyle. Nothing about a checklist. Ephesians says it even plainer.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Not as a result of works. The emphasis is on the “free” of the free gift.

Now, I can hear the question already, because it’s the first one everybody asks. “If it’s that free — if my life doesn’t factor in — then why be good at all? Sounds like a free pass to do whatever I want.”

Here’s the answer. Salvation is not the finish line. It’s the door. What you do after that door opens doesn’t earn your salvation — that’s a gift. But it absolutely decides what comes next. The Bible is clear that saved people have different outcomes based on what they did with what they were given. That’s not what the church calls the gospel of salvation. That’s the gospel of the Kingdom, and it’s the thing Jesus actually spent His time preaching. That’s where we’re headed.

For now, hold onto this. You were born in a cage. If you’ve believed in your heart and confessed with your mouth, the door is open and it is not getting locked again — not by a bad week, not by a bad year. The enemy would love for you to think you’re back in the cage. You’re not. The door is open.

What you do with an open door is the rest of the story. And it’s a good one.

If that helped, there’s more where it came from. Follow along.
